Initially appearing as red blotches on the skin, shingles tends to appear on only one side of the body. The effects of the illness can take up to four weeks to heal, but it is not contagious.

It's caused by a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. While shingles isn't contagious, it can spread chicken pox, so avoiding pregnant people, babies and those with weakened immune systems is advised.
