A new study has revealed that couples are tending to choose the bride's engagement ring together, rather than having the groom go it alone as was once the tradition.

The survey – which was carried out by One Poll, commissioned by the Natural Diamond Council and backed by Eco Age – revealed that 63 per cent of the couples questioned had picked out the precious piece of jewellery together, rather than having the ring chosen just by the partner who was asking the all-important question.

This shift in opinion feels significant with the responsibility of choosing an engagement ring traditionally lying with the groom.

However, although there has been some movement regarding how the ring is chosen, there has been little shift in what is being picked. According to the survey, traditional colourless white diamonds are still overwhelmingly the choice of stone for an engagement ring, with two thirds of the consumers asked opting for this.

"Despite all the ways in which our society has evolved over the centuries, the diamond endures as the ultimate expression of love and commitment and the most beautiful way to mark life’s most precious moments," Lisa Levinson, of the Natural Diamond Council said.

When it comes to choosing a diamond, these consumers believed clarity to be the most important factor to consider, followed by the setting and uniqueness, while the ideal size was found to be 2.2 carats.

The survey – which quizzed 2,000 people – also discovered which celebrity engagement rings were the most popular of all time, with the Duchess of Cambridge's sapphire style, which previously belonged to Princess Diana, coming out top.

The Duchess of Sussex's ring came in second, while celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé Knowles and Kim Kardashian West also featured. See the round up in full here.
