Love Island's Molly-Mae and Tommy have released a video talking about the cause of new puppy Mr Chai's death, and hitting back and backlash they've received for buying the Pomeranian from overseas.

Mr Chai, who was a birthday gift from Tommy to Molly-Mae for her 21st, died just six days after they got him. Molly announced the sad news on her Instagram stories this week, writing: "Tommy and I are utterly heartbroken and shocked to even be writing this - Our beautiful new puppy Mr Chai was taken ill in the last few days and tragically has passed away. Chai became our whole world in the short time we had him and we couldn't have taken any better care of him. We loved him so much and he brought us more happiness than we can describe."

The news was met with shock from fans, however the couple also received backlash, with some questioning why they had imported the dog from overseas.

In a 12-minute YouTube video, Molly revealed: "The vet rang up and said Chai had a seizure and he died. Tommy literally threw up everywhere.

"I was like: 'It's a prank' as we get prank called all the time and she was like: 'No, your dog has died.'"

"Chai's skull wasn't fully developed. Part of his brain was exposed. In a tiny dog, any knock probably wasn't very helpful."

She also addressed the backlash from fans, adding: "Whilst we completely understand everyone's opinions about being shipped over from Russia, what you need to understand is that is not what made him die.

"People that are saying we bought him for Instagram likes, please stop saying that.

"Our lives are on social media, my full-time job is to show you guys what I'm doing. If I didn't have Instagram, he wouldn't be on Instagram.

"We're not asking for any kind of sympathy. What's happened is awful. I'm asking you to understand that the dog travelling from Russia is not the reason he died."

Molly-Mae had previously revealed the pup was being imported, telling her Instagram followers: "He was meant to be here on my birthday btw guys but he's coming from Russia so there were delays etc."

This led to some fans questioning why they couldn't have got their dog from the UK, particularly due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

Molly also hit back at claims they had taken the dog out before he'd had has vaccinations, saying: "Chai had every single one - we have the paperwork. He was four and a half months old."

Such awful news.
