Celebrating Molly-Mae's 21st birthday, boyfriend Tommy Fury treated her to the Pomeranian puppy, who was imported from Russia. But the news that Mr Chai had travelled so far led critics and trolls to slam Molly-Mae and Tommy for buying the dog, questioning whether importing a dog was necessary travel during the Coronavirus pandemic, and saying that there are plenty of dogs without homes in the UK.
But after announcing Mr Chai's death on Wednesday, just six days after they got him, the couple have faced even more criticism, causing Molly to take a break from her socials.
A source revealed to The Sun Online, "Molly-Mae is taking a break to have time to herself for a few days."
Molly and Tommy previously took to YouTube to explain the cause of Mr Chai's death. Molly revealed, "Chai's skull wasn't fully developed. Part of his brain was exposed. In a tiny dog, any knock probably wasn't very helpful."
Molly also addressed the backlash she'd received, saying, "Whilst we completely understand everyone's opinions about being shipped over from Russia, what you need to understand is that is not what made him die."
However, that hasn't stopped critics from taking to Twitter to bash the couple, with one user calling them "stupid," suggesting that they hadn't researched the dog's needs and that they only bought him for "a photo op."
Meanwhile, some fans have urged others not to be too harsh on the influencer, with one writing, "sure, Molly-Mae got the dog shipped from Russia and maybe she just wanted a cute one, but it was still her f***ing dog and it died so maybe let's not bash her."
Another wrote, "Molly-Mae and Tommy are not bad people for simply being uneducated on the problems with that type of dog breeding!! If only people spent less time hating and more time teaching smh."
Still, it's completely understandable that Molly is taking some time away from social media at the moment. We hope that she'll be back soon!
