A Model Walked Down the Runway Wearing a Bag on Her Head

John Galliano strikes again with one of his strangest runway shows yet — that just happens to be one of the most memorable moments of Paris Fashion Week so far. For the designer’s Maison Margiela Fall/Winter 2017 show, a model walked with an oversized, furry black bag over her head. The odd placement of the purse loosely mimicked the wigs one would’ve worn during 18th century France. Of course, the threads here are not white, but jet black (and also fiery red).

The fluffy accessory was not accompanied by a voluminous, Marie Antoinette-esque gown, but rather a mere skintight nude tank top and blue jeans.

The collection showed significant similarities to Galliano’s earlier Maison Margiela couture show in January, which featured an array of garments that included geometric cutouts and loose, colored threads dangling from coat collars. Galliano’s surrealistic-style bowler hats as well as metallic oversized jewelry also made an appearance here.

Although no Snapchat filters made their way onto any garments in this collection, Galliano did include a cut-out Lady Liberty silhouette on the back of one of his trench coats.

Martin Margiela, the founder of Maison Margiela, originally rose to fame for his deconstructive yet largely equivocal fashion collections. Most garments made in this manner are typically “unfinished,” “coming part,” “recycled, or transparent.” Margiela always kept his fans and critics at bay. And, as exhibited here, there is no doubt Galliano is following in Margiela’s footsteps.
