Eyebrow preening is big business. From plucking and waxing to threading and feathering, most of us spend a small fortune neatly taming our brows into two tidy twin arches.

But not Scarlett Costello. The 19-year-old model from New York is breaking out of the brow mold and proudly rocking her unibrow.

Just like Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, the teenage beauty was blessed with a naturally bushy brow. But instead of doing all she can to remove the tiny hairs between her brows, Scarlett is championing her bold and beautiful unibrow.

“I’ve had it my whole life and I didn’t think much of it growing up,” she told Teen Vogue of her unique feature.

“My mum always told me it’s good to have thick brows because she plucked her thin ones off in the ’90s when pencil brows were in,” she continues.

“I definitely wanted shaped pointy brows when I was 15 or so, but thick bushy brows got trendy around then and I figured it was more ‘me’ to grow them out.”

That decision hasn’t always been easy and when she started out as a model, she felt pressure to conform to beauty brow standards so would wax it off.

But three years ago, her modeling agency suggested she let her brows grow back au natural to stand out from the crowd. And now she’s proudly embracing her unibrow in all its bushy beauty.

While she will sometimes pluck her eyebrows for a job, for the most part she’s happy to let her brow grow in all it’s natural glory.

And even though she still finds herself on the receiving end of brow-shaming, the teenager isn’t bothered in the slightest.

“I’m a big believer in the idea that everyone looks the best the way their genes intended them to. The confidence of embracing natural beauty is what makes it great.”
