Miss Universe has been won by Miss USA at the Planet Hollywood casino in Las Vegas.

Olivia, a 20-year-old university student from New York, takes the crown from last year’s Miss Universe, Leila Lopes from Angola.

Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon was runner up while Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, was third.

For the evening gowns round of the competition, Miss Brazil (far left) wore a silver sequinned dress that was slashed to the thigh, while Miss USA wore a raspberry coloured, velvet full skirt dress that was cut to the navel.

Miss Australia wore an angelic, winter white gown with silver embellishment while Miss Philippines looked magical in a baby blue sequined frock. Miss Venezeula (far right) wore an on-trend emerald gown with stripes of glitter.

But it was Miss USA who caught the attention of the judges and she took to Twitter to thank her fans for the support as she became the first American to win the title of Miss Universe in fifteen years.

Miss Great Britain, Holly Hale, failed to reach the final stages of the competition after attending the Costume Show in Las Vegas last week.

Holly, a 20-year-old Cardiff University student, was the second consecutive Welsh contestant to win Miss Great Britain earlier this year.

The winner of Miss Universe wins a luxury New York City apartment, an endless supply of beauty products, a winner’s wardrobe and an undisclosed salary.
