Making your own Christmas decorations is something the whole family can get involved in and this simple yet rustic tutorial will encourage creativity while also being fun. The kids will love making these natural twig trees that can be hung up as decorations, placed around your festive table or added to presents under the tree.

They're made from twigs and yarn so are really easy to make and you've probably already got all you need. You can stick to festive colours with these decorations or personalise to fit your own Christmas theme!

Plus, if you're looking to add a little extra to your gift giving this year, these mini festive trees make the perfect present toppers. Imagine your friends' faces when they see you've gone the extra mile with their wrapping? They'll love it!

You will need:

  • A selection of small twigs

  • Yarn, string or twine in festive colours

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)

  • Scissors (optional)

  • Gold paper star (optional)

To make:

1. Position your twigs in a triangular shape as this will form the base of your mini Christmas tree. You may want to use three twigs of similar width so that your trees look uniform. You can cut them to shape with a strong pair of scissors.

2. If desired, cut a small piece of twig for the tree base as Desirée Wilde has done.

3. Glue your twigs together with a hot glue gun. Be careful as the glue will be hot. You can also tie your trees with twine if you would rather not use glue. Make as many trees as necessary and set them aside to dry.

4. Once your trees are dry, take your pieces of twine or yarn and wrap each one around your Christmas tree. You can wrap these vertically and horizontally but start at the top and work your way down. You may want to concentrate on one colour per tree or mix your festive colours together. Two or three colours in total give a themed look but add more if you'd like.

5. Tie your yarn in place to secure at the ends and, finally, attach a looped piece of twine to the top if you want to use these as decorations.

6. If you'd like, glue your trees to some simple brown wrapping paper to create a stunning yet simple present topper like Claire from blog Fellow Fellow has done and add a gold star on top.

Remember, it doesn't matter if your trees look a little rustic or handmade – that's the beauty of this DIY.

Alternatively, you can use washi tape or ribbons and make these ribbon trees like Melissa from Fireflies and Mudpies has done or glue your twigs in a Christmas tree shape like Andreja has done.
