The stars who got caught lip-synching
They may have pitch perfect voices but that hasn’t stopped these stars cutting a few corners when it comes to a live performance. - 2/11
Selena Gomez
Selena shot to fame as a teenager playing the leading role of Alex Russo in the magical Disney Channel sitcom 'Wizards of Waverley Place' and soon kicked off a pop career, with songs such as 'A Year Without Rain' and has more recently scored hits with 'Lose You To Love Me' and 'Wolves'. But when Selena took to the Jingle Ball stage for a performance of her hit single, ‘Come and Get It’, in 2014, things didn't excatly run smoothly. After appearing frustrated on stage over apparent sound problems, Selena was caught shouting at members of the crew backstage. But the issues for the actress-turned-singer did not stop there. During the second verse of the song, Selena completely missed a line of the song as she kept her microphone down below whilst the record continued to play at full volume! Eeek!©BANG Showbiz - 3/11
Mariah Carey
Pop queen Mariah was picked to headline New Year’s Eve concert at Times Square with her signature festive anthem 'All I Want For Christmas is You'. However, things started to go awry from the start as Mariah was said to have complained openly on-stage over a supposed lack of rehearsal time and sound issues. Despite singing just two songs, Mariah’s pre-recorded vocals played for everyone to hear as she awkwardly stumbled around the stage after realising she had been caught out. - 4/11
Justin Bieber
Justin was out on the road entertaining fans every night back in 2012 but there was a particular concert in Glendale, Arizona which became the talking point of the tour. Justin was exposed to be lip-synching his track, ‘Out of Town Girl’, but was he exposed by the very reason he had chose not to sing live? As he strutted down a set of stairs on stage, Justin abruptly turned his back to the audience, crouched down and was sick on the stage, all in front of his wowing fans and all while the track with his vocals continued to play aloud as his misfortunes occurred. Oh Justin! - 5/11
Lindsay Lohan
Whilst she isn’t really known for her musical endeavours, Lindsay dabbled in pop music to capitalise on the back of her thriving movie career back in 2004. Whilst debuting her first single, ‘Rumours’, on Good Morning America, Lindsay appeared to miss her cue for one of her as she hastily tried to keep up with the sound of her own voice. Despite the hiccup, Lindsay's debut album 'Speak' managed to hit #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but her follow up 'A Little More Personal (Raw)' barely cracked the Top 20 and she has not recorded since. - 6/11
Lauren Jauregui
Whilst performing with her Fifth Harmony bandmates, Lauren has a VERY obvious miming blunder. Their performance of their ‘Hotel Transylvania’ track, ‘I’m In Love With A Monster’, a badly timed dance move come wardrobe change, badly exposed the studio recorded track that the girls were singling along to. Lauren moved the microphone away from her mouth in order to remove her coat at the same time as the girls. Lauren continued to mouth the words but she just sadly didn’t have the mic there! Poor Lauren. - 7/11
Camila Cabello
Whilst its obvious that it’s all five girls who have been partial to pretending to sing for a performance, only a few have evidently exposed them. Like bandmate Lauren, Camila was sadly caught out when the band were performing one of their earliest hits, ‘Sledgehammer’ at a Macy’s showcase. Whilst waiting for the track to kick in, Camila proceeds to ask the audience, ‘how is everybody feeling?’, but her pre-recorded vocals decided to kick in mid-way through her greeting. While Camila was quick to get onto the lip sync, the damage was already well and truly done. - 8/11
Beyonce
For many people, Beyonce can do no wrong but for fans of certain shows during her ‘On The Run’ tour, an array of lip-synching might have been a downfall. One clip in particular appeared to show Beyonce evidently just forgetting she has to pretend to sing! During sultry track, ‘Partition’, Beyonce goes to interact with fans and clearly pulls the microphone away from her mouth. We wonder what those fans were thinking in that moment!©BANG Showbiz - 9/11
Ashlee Simpson
When appearing on Saturday Night Live, Ashlee Simpson fell foul to a cringe-inducing lip sync fail. When the wrong track started playing with pre-recorded vocals, it left Ashless stranded on the stage with nothing to do. Ashlee proceeded to do an impromptu jig before awkwardly wandering off the stage. She ultimately blamed the embarrassing moment on ‘her band playing the wrong song’. Whoops! - 10/11
Ashley Tisdale
At the height of her ‘High School Musical’ fame, Ashely was a guest at the Thanksgiving parade performing a cover of the classic Wham! Christmas hit, ‘Last Christmas’, and it appared obvious to some in the crowds that Ashley’s top-notch vocals were taken straight from the CD. With some over-the-top actions, Ashley definitely did not help to conceal the fact she was not singing for real. However, it has been an apparent rule of the festive event for many years that its guest performers must lip-sync, so it's not entirely Ashley's fault. - 11/11
Britney Spears
The '...Baby One More Time' legend has long since been accused of lipsyncing and even admitted to using a "little bit of playback" to help her get through the shows at her Las Vegas residency back in 2017. But back in 2009, the pop star was touring with 'The Circus starring Britney Spears' in support of her sixth studio album that things really kicked off. When the tour reached Australia, fans were said to have stormed out of the show when they realized she was not singing live. Following the show, then Minister for Fair Trading Virginia Judge admitted she was aware that Britney would be lipsyncing and the event sparked a national debate as to whether concertgoers should be warned in advance if the show had been pre-recorded in any way.
BANG Showbiz
These stars may be known for cutting their vocal chops onto a chart-topping album or two but have also cut a few corners when it comes to a live performance. Whether it’s for an intricate dance routine, a sore throat or they just aren’t in the mood, these celebs have all been caught just mouthing along rather than belting out the notes live. From Beyonce to Britney, these performers have been partial to a mimed performance now and then.
