She dropped the single early Friday and sings about how “Once upon a time it was paradise / Once upon a time I was paralyzed / I think I'm gonna miss these harbor lights / But it's time to let it go."
As well as, “Once upon a time it was made for us / Woke up one day and it turned to dust / Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / So it’s time to let it go.”
Most interesting is that the artwork shows bottles of booze and pills bobbing around a pool and she also sings, “I want my house in the hills / Don't want the whiskey and pills / I don't give up easily but I don't think I'm down."
It’s an interesting choice considering sources from Cyrus’s side told TMZ that Miley tried to save her marriage but her so-called dealbreaker was that Liam was drinking a lot and using certain drugs — and that she wanted to no part of it.
A similar story popped up on People magazine, “Everyone always thinks Miley is problematic and immature and a hardcore partier while he’s this chill surfer dude, but that’s actually [not accurate],” a friend of the couple said. “Liam parties with his friends, and Miley thinks he should’ve grown out of that by now.”
While the reaction to Miley’s new song has been amazing positive from within her circle...
... she has faced criticism for airing dirty laundry from fans protective of both her and Liam. There is definitely some “poor Liam” going around.

Anyone else crying over Miley’s new song? Poor Liam...— Mary Craighead (@mercraig) August 16, 2019
And fans who wish she would “just leave him alone.”

I love Miley but i think she should start acting like a wife or just leave Liam alone. 🤷♀️— Naj 🌈 (@najzakri) August 16, 2019
People are definitely calling out the timing — less than a week after they announced their split — and are otherwise just feeling for Hemsworth, who said he wouldn’t be discussing the private matter.
I like you Miley but I also like Liam and imo that breakup song has come way too soon 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️— SYD (@sydmacdonaldd) August 16, 2019
The song cames out to a perfect time - exactly when the rumours about Liam were out. I think it’s on purpose— Jesse (@spacedudes97) August 16, 2019
slide away is one of my favorite Miley songs to date. it sounds so genuine & truthful to how she’s feeling right now..and it also made me hurt for Liam 💔— katie (@caddyshackmeow) August 16, 2019
I don't often comment on things like this but this @MileyCyrus / @LiamHemsworth is ☹️ Marriage breakdowns generally are very sad, Luckily 99.9% of us don't to have songs written at us . But Liam will eventually be ok Australians weather storms with class. Yanks not so much— Jane (@ozcushions) August 16, 2019
Did she split with Liam just to market a song?— Cheetoh Lock (@Cheetohs4Life) August 16, 2019
She’s also being called out for the “whiskey and pills” line. Now Cyrus didn’t say specifically who she was referring to — she could have been singing about herself for all we know— but if it is Liam, as Cyrus “sources” have been putting out there to the press, and it really is a problem for him, then maybe putting him on blast like this isn’t the best way to address the problem.
Last Saturday, as photos surfaced of Cyrus canoodling with Carter, the “Wrecking Ball” singer confirmed her split from Hemsworth after seven months of marriage. Here’s everything we know about the split.
