Singer Miley Cyrus, who is currently in a relationship with Australian musician Cody Simpson, has always been a fairly open book. Now, she's shared with fans that she's been "sober sober" for six months, prompted by vocal cord surgery back in November which saw her temporarily without a voice.
Earlier this year, Miley, who has previously discussed her love of smoking weed on many occasions, said she wouldn't be partaking in an unofficial smokers' celebration (4/20) on 20 April and that's she'd given up cannabis. She's now confirmed that alcohol is off the table too, in a new interview with Variety.
"I’ve been sober sober for the past six months. At the beginning, it was just about this vocal surgery... But I had been thinking a lot about my mother," she explained. "My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable."
Miley added that there's also a history of addiction in her family. "My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad raised himself. I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, “Why am I the way that I am?” By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great."
She also took the opportunity to wade in on the stigma that can sometimes surround young people who choose not to drink. "It’s really hard, especially being young... there’s that stigma of 'you’re no fun'. It’s like, 'honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun'."
Miley also said that she loves how energetic she feels now and that she doesn't miss being hungover (fair). "The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time. I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready."
It sounds as though Miley is in a really great place right now. Sobriety looks good on her!
