Cyrus and Hemsworth - teen sweethearts who met on the set of Nicholas Sparks rom-com The Last Song and married 10 years later following a high-profile on-off relationship - announced they were separating last year after just eight months of marriage.
Shortly after the couple's statement, Cyrus was pictured kissing her friend Kaitlynn Carter on holiday (who had recently separated from The Hills' Brody Jenner) with the pair then attending the MTV VMAs together.
However, Cyrus has now confirmed that - shock, horror - the reality of what actually goes on in the life of the A-List isn't always revealed in full to the public.
'I just went through a very public divorce that f**king sucked,' Cyrus told podcast host Joe Rogan.
The Disney alum said what was easier to deal with was the breakdown of the marriage, which she accepted after realising she and Hemsworth didn't 'love each other the way that we used to anymore', but found being vilified by numerous stories speculating on events the hardest to deal with.
'It's amazing to me that the public kind of thinks that there's no gap of time that they didn't see that could possibly be what led to this,' Cyrus explained, alluding to her divorce from Hemsworth and appearing to move on with Carter.
'Like, "one day you were happy on the carpet and then next day you're making out with your friend in Italy. What the f**k?" Well there's a lot of time in between that you didn't see.'
Cyrus also spoke of her personal development, saying she is a lot less 'emotional' than she used to be which was evident during her divorce.
'I feel that I worry sometimes that I can get over things easily," the star said. 'I don't fall to the floor and crawl up in a ball the way I used to, and I think that's a part of me growing up.'
Cyrus then discussed moving on in her romantic life - following her split from Cody Simpson - confirming that she is single for the first time in a long time.
'I don't need a man or a woman that's going to take care of me. I can take care of me because I've got money, I've got all the things that I need to take care of myself. I need them to be able to take care of them.'
