Michelle Heaton has said she is "heartbroken" after being eliminated from Dancing on Ice in a shock twist.

The former Liberty X singer was sent home from the competition after Phillip Schofield revealed that there would be no skate off and that the elimination would be decided by a combination of public vote and judges scores.

Heaton, who was paired with Łukasz Różycki, finished bottom of the judges scores with just 20, just behind former EastEnders star Patsy Palmer who scored 20.5.

Heaton addressed her exit on social media, writing: "What a ride … i didn’t want it to end. Heartbroken. Though hear me when I say, I am overwhelmed with the support on this platform & others, I hear the frustration .. trust me, I am sad too."

She continued on a positive note: "But guys, as one door closes another must open coz it’s the only way! We get up dust ourselves off and fight for the next dream."

Heaton concluded by saying: "I hope I’ve done you all proud . Thank you for @dancingonice for having me and @icelukasz ... what can I say? My journey was filled with joy, and laughter and many f**ks."

The twist did also not go down with viewers who criticised the lack of skate off. One viewer said: "This is why I hate so many public voting competitions, no way did Michelle deserve to go home. How can someone who fell over, spent 20+ seconds not even skating and off screen get kept in the competition?"

Another said Heaton deserved to skate again: "Well that result was ridiculous Michelle didn't deserve to go. She was better than at least 2 left. A skate off would have shown this."

After being eliminated, Heaton spoke to Schofield and Holly Willoughby and said: "I've loved every second of it, and I've loved everything that I just did there and this man [Łukasz Różycki] has just been amazing and I couldn't have done anything without him."
