The Met Gala 2018 has been trending online since the fashion spectacle kicked off last night in New York – and watching the night unfold through the lense of social media has so far made for hilarious viewing.

Aside from the incredible fashion the night had to offer (with some guests seriously nailing the ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme), perhaps even better were the memes and social media fallout…

Less-than-excellent looks were NOT safe

Celebrities should have been sent a letter of pre-warning: if you show up to the Met Gala in a lacklustre outfit, you might want to avoid the Internet for the next year or so.

People were taking no prisoners when it came to boring outfits, and the results were kind of funny…

But the stars that nailed the theme were praised in spectacular fashion

On the other hand, stars that actually stuck to the theme were to become the subject of memes so good they could be framed.

There were theories on the *real* reason Beyonce didn’t attend

Fans were disappointed when Beyoncé didn’t show up to the party. Rumour has it she was planning on coming until Jay Z whisked her away on a surprise holiday, but some people had other theories…

There was a whole meme sub-genre for Rihanna worship

Praise rained down on Rihanna all night thanks to her excellent Pope-inspired look, and the memes flooded in thick and fast…

Celebrities be warned: no one is safe from the Internet.
