Tottenham are reportedly one of four clubs to have registered an interest in signing Barcelona forward Memphis Depay before the summer window shuts on September 1.
Sport claims the Catalan giants are prioritising the sale of the Netherlands international in the remaining weeks of the window after strengthening their attack significantly with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.
And the report states that Spurs, Chelsea and Everton are all eyeing a move from England. Juventus, meanwhile, are targeting a move of their own to bolster their forward line.
Sport does go on to add, however, that Depay is ‘not convinced’ by the project at Tottenham. He also does not see Chelsea as a ‘first option’.
As for Everton, the 28-year-old views the Merseysiders as a non-starter given their lack of European football.
At this stage, it looks like Juve are the firm favourites to sign the former Manchester United star.
The Spanish outlet adds, however, that Juventus striking a deal for Depay could prove ‘complicated’.
That is due to the Serie A side wanting to sign the winger on loan with an option to buy. Juve currently have little room to play with regarding transfers due to financial fair play rules.
Finally, Sport states that Barcelona could loan Depay to Juve with an obligation to buy. However, they will only entertain that if the attacker signs a one-year contract extension – something which Depay’s agent has been reluctant to do so far.
Depay not the right fit for Tottenham
Even if Depay was looking to move to north London, it’s tough to see where the Netherlands star would fit in.
He struggled badly during his first stint in the Premier League with Manchester United. And while there is little doubt that he has improved significantly since then, Tottenham are already loaded in attack.
The addition of Richarlison over the summer has given them cover for all three forward positions.
Lucas Moura also covers the wide areas, as while as the right wing-back position. To that end, it’s tough to see where Depay would figure under Antonio Conte.
The only possible option is as a No.10, a position that Conte is still to really fill since his arrival.
However, the Italian’s system does not allow for a playmaking midfielder, given his preference to play a 3-4-3 formation.
That seemingly leaves Italy as Depay’s most likely destination, as the clock ticks on the window shutting.
