Last week, Melania Trump sparked global uproar on an impromptu trip to a southern Texas immigration centre after donning a coat emblazoned with the words: "I really don't care, do u?"

Now, the £30 Zara jacket in the centre of the media storm is fetching more than $850 (about £650) on eBay - more than 20 times the original price.

According to The Washington Post, several owners of the khaki-hued coat are cashing in on the controversy with one already snapped up for $500 (about £380) earlier this week.

Another eBay user is selling their secondhand high street number for $610 (about £465) with two days of bidding left to go.

But not everyone is planning on wearing the controversial jacket, as one user of US secondhand app, Poshmark, reportedly emphasised that they're buying one not "as a political statement, but as a Halloween costume".

In response to the First Lady's tone-deaf attire, thousands of dollars were raised for child migrants through the sale of knock-off merchandise.

PSA Supply Co - a clothing label run by video website Upworthy - launched T-shirts based on the coat's spray-painted message but instead emblazoned with the words: "I really do care, don’t u?"

In response to the unsurprising backlash, Donald Trump denied claims that the First Lady's parka bore a political message.

The US President tweeted: "I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’ written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!"
