In a rare public statement, Melania Trump has spoken out against her husband, addressing the controversial new immigration policy at the Mexico border, which is seeing children being split apart from their parents. The First Lady said, via her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham, that she "hates to see children separated from their families".

"We need a country that follows all laws," Melania reportedly said. "But one that governs with a heart."

Grisham added: "Mrs Trump hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform."

Melania's comments come after reports surfaced this weekend that young children are being held in cages in a Texas warehouse after being separated from their parents, with one cage housing as many as 20 children.

Trump's administration has, however, said that the press and politicians are falsely presenting the facts.

"We do not have a policy of separating families at the border”, the secretary of homeland security, Kirstjen Neilsen Tweeted. “DHS takes very seriously its duty to protect minors in our temporary custody from gangs, traffickers, criminals and abuse. We have continued the policy from previous administrations and will only separate if the child is in danger, there is no custodial relationship between ‘family’ members, or if the adult has broken a law."
