Mel Robbins is a former lawyer turned author, podcast host and motivational speaker.

In the late 2000s she transitioned her career into motivational speaking and spoke during a TEDx talk that has since been viewed over 33million times (one of the most watched ever) about the power of her self-help technique the 'five second rule'.

She's released five books, hosts her own podcast called The Mel Robbins Podcast where she speaks about her life, gives advices and interviews guests. Often the topics focus on habit formation, happiness, mental health and relationships.

Across her social media channels she has over 10million followers, which include Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Anniston and Chrissy Teigen. NBD.

You're likely to have heard them without even realising they're attributed to her. Like the five second rule for example, it involves counting backwards from five to 1 and then just doing whatever it is you need to do.

Late last year following the publication of her new book Let Them, a clip of her discussing the theory was going viral. The theory itself? Well as explained by Robbins it's about letting the people in your life do exactly what they're going to do without trying to control them. Why? "You spend so much time and energy trying to control other people and getting emotionally working up about things that are beyond your control. You can tap into peace and true control if you let them be themselves. If you let them, people will then reveal who they truly are."

The details from Mel's routine come from her podcast episode 253 which was released on 13th January 2025 and details the six steps Mel does everyday in the first 15 minutes immediately after waking up.

  1. Resist the snooze button - get up straight away at your first alarm.

  2. Make your bed.

  3. Give your herself a high five in the mirror - this is one of Mel's tried and tested techniques that sees you literally give yourself a high five in the mirror.

  4. Drink water before any caffeine - try and wait at least 60 minutes before having a coffee.

  5. Get outside and take in morning light - even if it's a cloudy day.

  6. Move your body - whether it's a walk (which you can combine with step 5), stretch or workout.
