It's a fact well known that being a member of the royal family often means curbing your experimental side. There are rules and regulations to follow if you're going to keep Queen Liz (who, by the way, has never eat a pizza) onside, so hair and beauty sacrifices are often made in the name of being a proper royal.
That in mind, since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left the royal family for new adventures, a whole world of hair and MUA opportunities have opened up to Meghan.
Of course, she's pretty busy casually changing the world, volunteering and spreading education - but, avid Markle fans that we are, we've also noticed a certain shift in her aesthetic in public appearances.
In her latest glowing appearance alongside Harry for TIME magazine, she implores the US public to register to vote, saying:
“Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime... but this one is. When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter, because you do and you deserve to be heard.”
And once we were over how articulate and compassionate her words were, we were able to appreciate her gorgeous new look, which comprises an extra-smoky eye, more bronzer than usual, and a deviation from her usual pink-nude lip.
Of course, heavier eye makeup and contouring isn't necessarily something Meghan would have had the freedom to experiment with as a royal, but here's the real clincher - her hairstyle was different too.
Of course, we've already gone into depth about her super-long lockdown lengths and mermaid curls - but while Meghan usually styles her hair in bouncy blow-dries, or one half of her hair tucked demurely behind an ear, this time she tried something a little more editorial - and we love it.
Firstly, her parting is more dead-centre than usual (she used to opt for a half-parting, which disappeared into volume and tumbling waves at the crown of her head). But secondly, her front sections are pinned tightly behind her ears too - something she'd never have done as a royal. Protocol usually demands either a coiffed up-do OR a flowing, bouncy blow-dry.
That in mind, Meghan's new, more modern look might have been a little too severe for royal duties. For her TIME speech, though, it's the perfect combination of effortless and chic.
It's not the first time she's tried something new in her post-royal life (last week we saw a side-ponytail)... and we certainly hope it's not the last.
