The royal family might have to appear fairly serious on the outside, but in private they're just regular people (with the addition of butlers, private trains and tiaras, of course). And that means they, too, can enjoy taking the piss out of each other with jokey presents at Christmas.

When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November 2017, the decision was made to welcome Meghan into the royal family immediately. Breaking with tradition, the former actress was invited to spend Christmas with the royals at Sandringham - a privilege that's usually reserved for married couples only. And it seems she fit right in, embracing the family's festive tradition of buying funny gifts for one another and exchanging them on Christmas Eve.

To give you something of an indicator about just how LOL these presents are, Kate Middleton is rumoured to have bought Prince Harry a 'Grow Your Own Girlfriend' kit years ago, back in his single days. Yup. I'm having excellent visions right now about how well that would have gone down with the Queen.

But back to Meghan. As revealed in an unauthorised biography about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Finding Freedom, she was tasked with buying a joke gift for Prince William among others on her first year, and she absolutely nailed the brief in my opinion.

"Meghan's biggest challenge was finding the perfect novelty gifts to amuse her new extended family," royal correspondents Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote in the biography. "At least one of her gifts was a huge hit - a spoon for William that had 'cereal killer' embossed on the shallow bowl end of the utensil."

Just perfect.

According to Scobie and Durand, there was a lot of pressure attached to buying the right presents, too. They wrote that it was basically "an audition like no other, and [Meghan] wanted to impress her future royal relatives."

I wonder what Meghan and Harry will have sent across to their royal relatives this year for Christmas. A supply of toilet roll? A Christmas bauble in the shape of a germ?

Who knows, but we could probably all do with being cheered up by some jokey presents this year...
