Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance at a Uvalde memorial, paying tribute to victims of a primary school shooting in Texas on Tuesday May 24.

The shooting, brought on by 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos, at Robb Elementary School, led to no less than 19 children dying, including 10-year-old Xavier Lopez and Amerie Jo Garza, as well as two teachers.

Markle placed a bouquet of white roses trimmed with purple ribbon at a cross for 9-year-old Uziyah Garcia while at the makeshift memorial outside the Uvalde County Courthouse.

A spokesperson for Markle and Prince Harry told Harper's Bazaar that the Duchess of Sussex visited 'in a personal capacity as a mother, to offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief'.

The 40-year-old mother-of-two, who kept a low-profile during her visit and was believed to be accompanied by a bodyguard, also reportedly visited a community centre that was hosting a blood drive.

While there, she was understood to have dropped off two crates full of 'sandwiches, beverages, and desserts'.

Volunteer Gloria Contreras told BuzzFeed News: 'I had no idea who she was. She just was carrying on a conversation like her and I knew each other for years.

'We were talking about Texas and Uvalde and how it is to be in a small town and how everybody is so kind and warm-hearted and know we know each other and stuff and how the faith is deep-rooted.'

Speaking of Markle, another volunteer, Georjean Burnell, told the same news outlet: 'She was just really sweet.

'She just kind of walked in with her crew and started putting ice waters in the bucket with us and laying out chips for the people who were needing snacks before and after donating.

'It's funny, we didn't even know it was her until after she left and now we're so sad. I mean, to be honest, we thought she was our neighbour.'

Almost 500 pupils are enrolled at Robb Elementary School, which sits within a small community, approximately 80 miles west of San Antonio.

The Texas shooting is considered one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history.

A Texas law enforcement official said the gunman entered the school 'unobstructed' through a supposedly unlocked door.

Markle resides in Montecito, California with Prince Harry and their children Archie, three and Lilibet, 11 months, since stepping back as a working royals and leaving the UK in 2020.

The duchess has previously campaigned for paid parental leave in the US, saying it should be a 'national right'.

She wrote: 'I’m not an elected official, and I’m not a politician. I am, like many, an engaged citizen and a parent from here.'

Markle related this plea to her and Prince Harry's own experience, admitting that like most parents, they felt 'overwhelmed' after welcoming their second child Lilibet.
