Although it's now officially been over a year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced that they'd be stepping away from their roles as senior working royals, we've always kind of hoped that maybe it was just an extended holiday they were taking... and that they'd... come back to the UK one day? I know, I know, but we miss her iconic outfits, his dad jokes and their wee son, Archie.
Anyway, it seems that the likelihood of that (which let's be honest, was slim to begin with) has shrunk even more. Not only did the couple purchase their first permanent home Stateside last summer, after a stint of renting actor Tyler Perry's LA abode, but now it's reported that Meghan is no longer able to become a British citizen. In fact, a source said the Duchess has "no reason" to, when discussing said plans with The Telegraph. Gulp
Why is this a big deal? Well, in case you'd forgotten, Kensington Palace initially announced that Meghan would be applying for dual citizenship after she married into the royal family back in 2017. The official process required her to live in the country for three years – and since the Duchess left before that time could pass, her application is kind of, err, scuppered.
However, while our hopes that the couple might have a chance of heart and return to London life might have been dashed, it's reported that they are set to be flying over later on in the year for a reunion with some other royal family members. Hurrah!
Although their migration away from working royal life has pretty much been completed now, the Queen's birthday celebrations in June, known more formally as the Trooping of the Colour ceremony, is deemed a family occasion, rather than a working one. The parade, which typically features over 1400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians (just a small ensemble then?) is set to take place on 12 June.
Of course, given the small matter of the global pandemic, the event may look a little different this year – but sources say the Queen is very keen for it to go ahead in some capacity... meaning we'll likely be seeing the family gather on the balcony at Buckingham Palace from a group shot and some waving.
