Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could 'wait at least a year before having children,' says etiquette expert

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in May, there has been speculation over when the couple will have children.

The Duchess of Sussex sparked pregnancy rumours at the 100 Days to Peace Gala last month, when she wore a blue Jason Wu dress, which appeared to give the illusion of a ‘baby bump.’ It turned out to be just the angle of some photographs and the ruffles on her frock.

Having only been husband and wife for five months and with a packed royal tour coming up, etiquette expert Liz Brewer thinks the couple will wait to start a family.

Speaking on episode 8 of Yahoo UK’s ‘The Royal Box,’ she says: “He wants a family, but they’re a young couple, embarking out on life, they don’t actually have to have a family right now.

“What they want to do is they want to get involved in the world at large, in the Commonwealth, she wants to do what she’s doing.”

The Royal Box’s presenter Kate Thornton says: “You can do that with children.”

Brewer says: “Then the children don’t have the benefit of having you around, which they have at the moment with Kate.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have three children, their youngest Prince Louis was born in April and Kate has recently returned to royal duties, after five months of maternity leave.

Brewer adds that she doesn’t think that babies are the plan for Harry and Meghan at the moment.

“I think the plan is to wait at least a year, maybe longer, before getting pregnant.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are heading off on a royal tour of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands on October 16.

Two of the places they will be visiting – Fiji and Tonga – have been classified as having a moderate risk of Zika virus transmission.

The NHS website’s advice for women trying to conceive states: “It is recommended that you avoid becoming pregnant while travelling to an area with high or moderate risk of Zika virus transmission, and for eight weeks after you return home.”

For men travelling to areas with high or moderate risk of the virus, the NHS recommends taking precautions for six months.

This could mean that Harry and Meghan’s baby plans may be put on hold until next year.
