Meghan Markle's character will question whether she made the "world's biggest mistake" marrying into the Royal Family in the latest Lifetime TV movie about her and Prince Harry.

Harry and Meghan: Escaping the Palace is the network's third film about the royal couple, covering their decision to step back from their senior royal duties, move to the US and make their own money.

In a dramatic trailer shared on Instagram, Harry's character says he wants to protect his family, while Meghan questions the decision she made.

The film, due out sometime this Autumn, follows 2018’s Harry & Meghan and 2019’s Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal.

In the trailer Harry, played by Jordan Dean, says: "I will do everything in my power to keep my wife and son safe."

Kate, played by Laura Mitchell, says: "This is the life we signed up for. Here we value dignity above all else."

Sydney Morton, playing Meghan, says: "I never thought this would be easy, but I wanted to make the Queen proud."

Part of the comment echoes the words Meghan said to Tom Bradby during their Autumn 2019 tour in South Africa, where she said: "I never thought that this would be easy but I thought it would be fair."

William, played by Jordan Whalen, says: "Let everyone understand it, the monarchy is at stake."

In a talking head style moment, the Queen, played by Maggie Sullivan, says: "The monarchy will always survive."

The trailer ends with Morton asking: "Have I made the world's biggest mistake?"

Deadline previously reported that Lifetime wanted this film to "detail Meghan’s growing isolation and sadness, their disappointment that ‘The Firm’ was not defending them against the press’s attacks and Harry’s fear that history would repeat itself and he would not be able to protect his wife and son from the same forces that caused his mother’s untimely death".

While the film is highly fictionalised, particularly in terms of exact dialogue, the filmmakers will have plenty of the couple's own side of the story to base the movie on, because of their sit down interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

A teaser two weeks ago showed the latest film would include a recreation of that interview.

The third film in the series has not gone down well on social media, with comments under the trailer suggesting it should not have been made.

One said: "I will do everything in my Power not to watch."

Another added: "This is laughable. Way to make a bad situation worse."

The real life Harry and Meghan announced plans to step back from senior royal life in January 2020, and were denied their plans to work and represent the Queen.

They confirmed in February 2021 that they would not be returning to working royal life. They live in California with their two children, Archie, two, and Lilibet, one month, and have contracts with Netflix and Spotify to produce programmes and podcasts.
