The Duke and Duchess of Sussex surprised their devoted fan across the globe, by sending her a personalised letter on her 99th birthday.

Australian war widow Daphne Dunne was delighted when she was presented with the card, which read: “Dear Daphne. My wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday.”

The letter continued: “We hope you have a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends and that you’ve managed to escape hospital. Congratulations on reaching this important and impressive milestone before your centenary year next year. Happy birthday, Daphne.”

It was signed off with “Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

Daphne first met Harry in 2015 and has built up a special relationship with him. The pair were reunited again in 2017 when he travelled to Sydney for the Invictus Games.

But their most recent meeting was during the royal tour of Australia last October, when Harry introduced Daphne to his wife Meghan.

The duke and duchess announced they were expecting their first child at the start of their overseas visit.

Daphne congratulated them and Meghan told her: “Hopefully the next time we see you, we’ll have our little one with us.”

Daphne was unfortunately in hospital on her milestone birthday. Her daughter Michelle Haywood told Australia’s Today Show: “I think Meghan and Harry have got mum through this terrible illness she’s had.

“She’s still very unwell and the card they’ve sent means so much. I think it will be the thing that gets her through.”

Harry and Meghan’s baby is expected to arrive within the coming weeks.
