A Mediterranean-style beach club is set to open at Tresanton, one of Cornwall's best hotels, in June.

The owner, Olga Polizzi, has acquired the large garden directly below the hotel and transformed it into an exotic beach club, one which you might expect to find on the likes of the Amalfi Coast or the Greek Islands.

Imagine a Cornish country house owned by an Italian Contessa, immersed in sub-tropical gardens that suggest she spends her holidays in Bali

The lowest of the three terraces will be set just above the waterline with views out to St Anthony’s lighthouse. The mid-terrace will hold sunloungers and umbrellas, while the top terrace is home to tables and chairs, set amid plants, for guests eating snacks or P.O.S.H burgers, which are already served from the existing Nook terrace in the garden.

There will also be a new juice bar serving freshly-pressed concoctions and coffees. It’s a place for ‘lounging, dreaming, stargazing and listening to the sound of waves.’

This year the hotel has enlarged the terraces of rooms 5 and 6 which now have sofas and eating areas

The hotel itself is housed within the building of a former 1940s yacht club – its history is still honoured today as Tresanton has its own wooden yacht, Pinuccia, which was built in 1939. It’s available for skippered sails around the Fal Estuary and Helford River from May to September.

This, and the weekly summer barbecues, mean that Tresanton is a key player in St Mawes’ social summer scene. There is also a tidal beach directly below the hotel with rock pools and a floating swimming platform.

There are 30 unique though nautically styled bedrooms, spread across the main house, five fisherman’s cottages and a stylish annex, each with sea views

Our Cornwall expert says of the hotel: “Imagine a Cornish country house owned by an Italian Contessa, immersed in sub-tropical gardens that suggest she spends her holidays in Bali. When it opened in 1998, England had seen nothing like this sophisticated, insouciant seaside hotel. It has since had many imitators, but there is still nowhere like Tresanton.”

There are 30 unique though nautically styled bedrooms, spread across the main house, five fisherman’s cottages and a stylish annex, each with sea views, and 11 with their own furnished terraces or balconies.

Alongside the new club, the hotel has also enlarged the terraces of rooms 5 and 6 which now have sofas and eating areas. Six bathrooms have also been redesigned so they now have free-standing showers as well as bathtubs.
