Vegetarians may have the advantage over meat eaters when it comes to health, but there’s one area they’re apparently lacking in compared to carnivores: sex.

And even though more people now than ever are avoiding meat-based diets (In 2016, an Ipsos MORI survey reported that the number of vegans in Britain had risen 360 per cent in a decade) it seems there are still some benefits to chowing down on a steak.

A study of 2,000 brits found meat eaters are 26% more likely to have sex once a week than veggies.

Conducted by Gourmet Meat Club, a online provider of ethically sourced meat, the survey found 42% of people who eat meat have sex once a week, compared to 16% of vegetarians.

The connection between meat and sex drive has been linked to testosterone before.

Red meat contains high levels of zinc, which plays a big role in both testosterone and fertility, as it helps to form key parts of the sperm.

Testosterone is the vital hormone used in the development of male sexual characteristics, which leads to a high sex drive.

“For males, zinc is a vital nutrient to help maintain normal levels of testosterone in the system,” Emma Derbyshire, nutritional insight researcher, told the Express.

“Without it, both sex drive and fertility could be seriously impacted, with a host of other negative repercussions occurring as well.”

When looking into which area of the UK is spending the most time in bed, the Welsh came out on top with 49%, followed by England at 46% and Scotland at 40%.

The Gourmet Meat Club also asked respondents what their meal of choice would be to impress a partner.

Rump or Sirloin steak came out as the top choice, at 18%.

Next on the menu was a roast dinner at 17%, nine percent would cook up spaghetti bolognese and eight percent a curry.

But although eating meat might supposedly be better for your sex life, it might not be better for your body.

A vegetarian diet has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer, leading to a longer life expectancy.

It’s also been recommended for healthy weight-loss.
