Mean Girls' musical reimagining has brought in Jenna Fischer and Busy Philipps to play Mrs Heron and Mrs George.

News of the pair's casting arrives via Deadline, with The Office US and Dawson's Creek faces joining the previously confirmed Angourie Rice (Mare of Easttown), Auli'i Cravalho (Moana), newcomer Jaquel Spivey, Avantika (Senior Year), Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Bebe Wood (Love, Victor), plus the original cult comedy's Tim Meadows and Tina Fey (who also wrote the script).

Mrs Heron is of course lead character Cady's mother, while Mrs George is the equivalent to The Plastics ringleader Regina.

Last month, Fey herself stopped by talkshow Late Night with Seth Meyers where the subject of Mean Girls the musical cropped up in conversation.

"The songs are sounding really more kinda pop. In Broadway everything has to play to the back of the house and in movies everything can come back in and things can play really intimately," she explained.

Following the release of Mean Girls almost two decades ago, which itself was adapted from Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes, the story was transformed for the Broadway stage 13 years later – inspiring Fey to revisit these characters on the big screen, but with a twist.

During the musical movie's original announcement, Fey shared in a statement: "I'm very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen.

"It's been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I've spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly."
