A new study has shown that drinking coffee could help you live longer - but it depends on what time of day you drink it.

The research looked at people who drank coffee at different times of the day and found that those who drank coffee in the morning had a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. They also lowered their risk of an early death. So far, so good.

These morning coffee drinkers were found to be 31% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, and 16% less likely to die of any causes (during a 10 year follow up period).

Interestingly, people who drank coffee all throughout the day didn't experience the same health benefits. Of course, it's worth pointing out that the study can't definitively prove whether coffee was the sole cause of the outcomes either way. However, the researchers of the study officially concluded that, "Drinking coffee in the morning may be more strongly associated with a lower risk of mortality than drinking coffee later in the day."

The researchers studied 40,000 adults across the US and published their findings in the European Heart Journal on Wednesday (8 Jan).

And while coffee was the strongest health booster, the researchers couldn't be sure exactly why the timings are so important. Current speculations are that drinking coffee later in the day could mean caffeine interferes with sleep, which can have negative health consequences.
