Ewan McGregor has filed for divorce from his wife Eve Mavrakis after 22 years of marriage, it has been reported.

TMZ states that the Star Wars actor has cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason, adding that the papers state he wants joint custody of their three minor children and is willing to pay spousal support.

The publication also reports that Mavrakis is seeking sole custody of their children, and wants visitation rights for her estranged husband.

Rumours that the two had split up began to circle near the end of last year, after McGregor had been spotted several times with his Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, but the separation date on McGregor's filing is listed as May 28.

It is believed that it was on the set of Fargo that McGregor and Winstead became close.

Neither the Trainspotting actor nor his production designer ex have made a public statement regarding their break-up, but the latter hinted at it when an Instagram user commented about the reports surrounding Winstead.

McGregor also recently attended the Golden Globes, where he scooped the award for Best Actor in a TV movie or miniseries for Fargo, and thanked both his ex-wife and Winstead in his speech.

"There would been no Ray without Mary Elizabeth Winstead, so thank you very much," he said said, before later adding: "I want to take a moment to just say to Eve, who always stood by me for 22 years, and my four children, Clara, Esther, Jamyan and Anouk, I love you."

Speaking to the press after his win, he denied any knowledge about a Star Wars anthology movie spin-off focusing on his character of Obi-Wan Kenobi (whom he played in the prequels), but admitted that he would love to reprise the role of the famous Jedi were he asked.
