McDonald’s Is Changing the McFlurry Cups — and Introducing a Mini McFlurry

A new "four-flap" cup will replace the McFlurry plastic lid on Sept. 10

The McDonald’s McFlurry got a major makeover.

On Sept. 4, the fast food chain announced that they’re doing away with the frozen treat's plastic lid and instead introducing a “four-flap” cup. Meant to advance McDonald’s efforts to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, the new packaging will roll out in restaurants nationwide starting on Sept. 10.

The burger brand also announced that the McFlurry will now be offered in a mini size in addition to the standing regular size.

“The Mini McFlurry is heading to participating U.S. restaurants nationwide and will be available on the McDonald’s App and via McDelivery starting Sept. 10,” reads a statement from McDonald’s USA.

“Got a friend who always wants ‘just a bite’? Instead of grabbing an extra spoon, you can grab them a Mini McFlurry of their own. Or maybe you’re looking for a quick afternoon pick-me-up... the Mini McFlurry is perfect for you, too,” the statement continues.

The new serving size of the McFlurry will also come in the company’s new packaging.

In October 2023, McDonald’s got rid of their McFlurry spoons. For many customers, the utensil was a point of confusion as some often mistook its hollow shape for a straw. Instead, it simply doubled as a spindle to funnel and mix in sweet toppings.

The new McFlurry spoon design features a “smaller black spoon that uses less plastic,” per a statement at the time.

McDonald's said the “small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste."

In July, the brand introduced an innovative McFlurry flavor: the Kit Kat banana split. Made with vanilla soft serve, real banana bits, strawberry clusters and Kit Kat pieces, the limited-run treat was very candy-charged.

In May, the home of the Big Mac rolled out the Grandma McFlurry. It contained "delicious syrup," crunchy candy pieces ("like grandma's favorite treat that she hid in her purse!") and vanilla soft serve. The Grandma McFlurry was meant to be "sweet — just like grandma," the company said.

New McFlurry flavors have popped up over the years, including the Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry in April 2023 and the Peanut Butter Crunch McFlurry in August 2023.
