The prestigious Harden’s Best UK Restaurants Guide has named the top eateries for 2017 – and a sushi restaurant has taken the coveted first place. The Araki in Mayfair, which has only been open for three years, is said to be the best restaurant in the United Kingdom.

The eatery – which is owned by chef Mitsuhiro Araki – is infamously hard to get into, with a waiting list of at least six months and a cost of £300 a head. The restaurant can only seat nine people at a time, with just two sittings per dinner every evening. It will now, no doubt, be even harder to get a reservation.

The eatery’s success is down to its “fabulous level of attention and ingredient quality” according to Peter Harden, the co-founder and editor of the respected food guide. He added: “Smaller restaurants do better because the chef can really focus on your meal and your experience”.

Harden’s Guide is now in its 27th year and takes into account up to 50,000 reviews of 8,500 diners’ experiences. In 2017, London continues to dominate the guide, with Edinburgh in second place and Manchester becoming the fastest improving city for fine dining, but still far behind the others.

The West Country’s culinary reputation has also been given a boost thanks to Bristol’s Casamia, which was rated the second-best restaurant in the UK. It provides a multi-course tasting menu which takes three and a half hours to eat.
