After wrapping up our interview with Maya Jama, there’s one more question that instantly springs to mind: how do we make her part of our friendship circle? The TV presenter is warm, honest, refreshingly down to earth, and had us in stitches for 20 minutes straight.
Playing a game of ‘Spill The Tea’, filmed pre-lockdown, Maya revealed everything from her biggest worry when it comes to meeting a new man to beauty tips and becoming the “dildo provider” for her pals. As for her perfect Saturday night in, it involves plenty of drinks, food and making music. See, who wouldn’t want to be friends with her?
What’s the best and worst thing about being Maya Jama?
“I think the best thing is I’m basically living my childhood dream of being on telly, having a laugh and living la vida loca. I think that’s nice, quite lit. I think the worst thing is... I don’t think there’s anything bad. I suppose sometimes when it comes to boys, like meeting new people, you don’t know if they’re actually genuine or if they just want you to promote their business on your stories.”
Single or a relationship?
“It depends on the seasons in life. I’m a proper relationship girl, like I’ve been in long relationships but now I’m single, so they’re both alright. I think single in a pandemic is a bit of a different experience because you are single, single but I’m alright with either.”
What’s the silliest thing you’ve bought recently?
“I keep buying my friends dildos. I don’t know if that’s silly but it’s just that a lot of my friends hadn’t ever used a dildo before and they’re 25 plus and I’m like 'come on, it’s time. It’s time!' So, yeah, I’ve bought three of my friends dildos recently. I’m like the dildo provider because they were lonely and I think everyone should have a dildo.”
What does your ideal Saturday night look like?
“Being in my house with all my friends with loads of drink and food and sitting around and getting joke. A lot of my friends make music, so when we get smashed we make songs within the friend group. Mine will obviously never get released because they’re trash, but it’s a nice little group activity to do. Or I’m either half and half. I’m either [up for] a really nice wholesome night in with the pals or I’m [up for] a massive Ibiza bender.”
What’s your most unusual habit?
“If I flush the toilet at night I quickly run to my bed. It’s been like that since I was a child. My toilet used to be far from my bedroom and in my mind if there were monsters they would come out when the toilet flushes because that’s when they can be noisy and run through the house. So I’ve grown up with that same theory - if there was a burglar or anything that would be their chance to run because I wouldn’t hear them from the flush. So I’ve got a weird thing about a toilet flushes at night time.”
What’s the funniest rumour you’ve heard about yourself?
“I think it’s rumours of me dating people I’ve never met, because I’m like where do you even get that from? Once I’ve been in a different country and seen a headline like ‘Maya spotted kissing so and so here’ and I was like I’m not even in the same country as the person! I think at the beginning I would get really like ‘what? Why?’ and I would want to argue back or reply and make sure everybody knew it was b*llocks.”
Do you ever want to respond to trolls?
“I’m in and out with it. It depends on my day, it depends on what’s going on, it depends on the comment. If I can say something funny back then I probably sometimes would. But if it’s just straight up horrible then I would mute them or block or ignore. But I try not to though because I’ve learnt from experience that when you reply to them they get really excited and that’s their time to shine, and then all the insults come out. Or, it’s like ‘oh my god you replied, I love you’ and you just think ‘what the f**k!’”
