After the shock news late last week that Daniel Lee would be stepping down as creative director of Bottega Veneta, the Italian fashion house has announced his replacement. In a release sent out to press, the brand revealed that Matthieu Blazy would take over the creative direction of the house, with immediate effect.

The appointment marks an internal promotion for a designer who has worked his way up. Until now, Blazy held the role of ready-to-wear design director at Bottega Veneta, where he has clearly impressed.

Before this, Blazy has had stints working under Raf Simons at his namesake brand and at Calvin Klein, under Phoebe Philo at Céline, and he also held a post at Maison Martin Margiela.

"Matthieu Blazy is an extraordinarily talented individual, whom I am proud and excited to entrust with the creative helm of our luxury house," said Leo Rongone, CEO of the brand. "Bottega Veneta has always been equated with signature craftsmanship and distinctive creativity. Matthieu’s appointment will further enhance the modern relevance of our brand and accelerate our growth, while preserving the values that are at the core of Bottega Veneta."

The appointment marks a new chapter for the house, which saw huge success under Lee, who was widely credited with transforming the brand with his understated, undeniably cool, brand of luxury.

How far Blazy will change and adapt this aesthetic remains to be seen, but there is clear confidence behind the designer coming from François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Bottega's parent company Kering, who praised his "wealth of experience and broad cultural background".

"It will allow him to bring his creative impetus to the task of carrying on the legacy of Bottega Veneta," he said.

Blazy will present his first collection for Bottega Veneta during the shows in February 2022.
