MasterChef has crowned its 2022 winner following tonight's (May 5) tense challenge where the finalists paraded their finest dishes.
After getting to work with Gordon Ramsay, this year's competition culminated in the three finalists – Eddie Scott, Pookie Tredell and Radha Kaushal-Bolland – cooking the most delicious three-course meal they could come up with in three hours.
It was marine pilot Eddie who became the 18th amateur cook to take the title home. He won the hearts (and bellies) of judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode with a three-course menu combining Indian and French influences.
For their menus, Pookie brought Gregg and John to "Pookieland" with imaginative Thai courses, while Radha crafted an entirely vegetarian meal honouring her family traditions.
As for Eddie, he was inspired by his childhood memories, starting out with turbot, topped with caviar, tempura oyster, and cucumber compressed in dill oil and a champagne beurre blanc – a nod to his family holidays in Brittany.
His main course was a twist on chicken biryani topped with caraway and nigella seed pastry and served with spiced basmati rice with crispy onions.
For dessert, Eddie served his take on a classic French dish, St Emilion au Chocolat: a chocolate mousse with a prune purée centre, prunes soaked in Armagnac, almond frangipane, and an almond and Armagnac crème Chantilly.
"When I look at you, I can't honestly imagine you doing anything else but cooking, you are a born cook. I can't pay you any better compliment," Gregg told Eddie after tasting his menu.
It was a tough decision to make for the judges, who acknowledged Radha's evolution as a cook and Pookie's innovative touch. Ultimately, however, it was Eddie who became this year's champion, immediately bursting into tears of joy.
"It's everything. My whole life I feel has been building up to this moment," Eddie said after winning.
"It's just been the most stressful and the most enjoyable. I feel I've really discovered who I am as cook. It's the best feeling ever."
