If Lashana Lynch has one piece of advice for dealing with criticism, it's this: look for the truth in it.
"When [criticism] comes from people I care about, I usually take it on board as a point of growth, because I know that they're saying it for a reason; they have me at heart," she tells us. "The strangers don't. If I find truth in it, then I usually take it on board to work on. If I don't see truth in it then I have to remember that it's not always me - sometimes it's them."
And she's talking from experience. When it was leaked last year that Lynch would be playing the first Black, female 007 agent in the upcoming Bond film, No Time To Die - a role that was confirmed in her recent Harper's Bazaar cover shoot - the actress experienced an unprecedented amount of backlash, vitriol and online trolling, causing her to delete her social media accounts for a week.
"The conversation around not wanting 007 to be a woman was great, because a conversation was being had - I think that was a great start," she tells us as part of our new Master the Art video franchise. "This is probably one of the most powerful and poignant conversations that the franchise has had, and is very relevant to where we are today and the world that we've been growing towards for a long time."
She continued: "I am one Black woman. If it was another Black woman cast in the role that I play in No Time To Die, then it would have been the same conversation; she would have had the same attacks, same abuse. So it's not personal to me. I just have to remind myself that the conversation is happening, and I'm part of something very, very revolutionary."
