Massive Traffic Jams Paralyze Paris Night Before COVID-19 Lockdown

Massive traffic jams froze up the streets of Paris, France on October 29, the night before the country went into its second COVID-19 lockdown.

Footage uploaded to Twitter by cyclist @EmmanuelSPV shows a line of cars stretching several city blocks down Boulevard de Sébastopol. “Very unusual total traffic jam on Sébastopol,” wrote @EmmanuelSPV, according to Google Translate.

According to the TomTom Traffic Index, hourly congestion levels show a traffic increase beginning at 5 am and extending through 11 pm on October 29.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the second lockdown on Wednesday, October 28, citing the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in France and Europe. The new restrictions ban all social gatherings and, as with the first lockdown, requires individuals to fill out a form to justify leaving their residence.
