Mary Berry has opened up about spending 10 nights in hospital after she broke her hip and underwent surgery to repair it.

The former Great British Bake Off judge suffered the break after accidentally falling over bricks in her garden whilst picking sweet peas.

Speaking to the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine, the 86-year-old revealed that she called out for her husband Paul to help her but he couldn’t hear her due to watching a cricket match. Luckily, her son-in-law Dan was in earshot and quickly came to the rescue to call an ambulance.

"He saw me and said, 'I’ll get an ambulance.' I said, 'Oh, no, I’m fine,' but he overruled me," she said.

"He rang for the ambulance and they said, 'We’re very, very busy.' It was Sunday afternoon and there were lots of football injuries and whatever," she said. "We waited for three-and-a-half hours, until 6pm, and quite right too! I was perfectly happy."

"I quite understood that they were busy and Dan was caring for me. He kept me chatting,” she added.

After assessment at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, it was discovered that her hip was broken and “one foot was turning out”. She underwent surgery the following morning where her hip was repaired rather than replaced.

Mary confirmed that she has been healing since and commented on how kind the doctors at the hospital were, saying: “Oh, they were all lovely!”.
