Marquette shocks No. 4 Wisconsin with wild, one-handed tip-in at buzzer

The 2020-21 college basketball season was expected to be among the most chaotic in recent memory, and Marquette more than delivered on Friday against No. 4 Wisconsin.

After a back-and-forth battle with the Badgers, Marquette found itself down 65-64 with the ball and five seconds remaining in the game. Guard D.J. Carton rushed the ball up the floor and eventually ran straight into Wisconsin’s D’Mitrik Trice, who didn’t get the charge call he was looking for.

Carton went to the line and made the first free throw to tie the game at 65. On the next, he came up short. And then, this happened:

Marquette’s shocking buzzer-beater

A bouncing, buzzer-beating, off-balance, one-handed putback by freshman Justin Lewis off a missed free throw to win the game. Just like they drew it up.

The winner was the final shot of a career day for Lewis, who finished with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting and eight rebounds off the bench. Lewis is one of three four-star recruits who made up a recruiting class ranked No. 27 in the country by Rivals.

The loss snaps an 11-game active winning streak for the Badgers, who won their last eight games of the season last year before the COVID-19 pandemic swallowed the rest of the season. At 3-0 this year, they were expected to be among the Big Ten’s best.

Instead, Marquette gets a big-time win at home, and college basketball looks more chaotic than ever after upset losses by the likes of Kentucky, Virginia and Villanova to open the season
