Marcus Rashford took his mum to receive his MBE from Prince William

Marcus Rashford has been honoured with an MBE and he took his mum with to receive the award at Windsor Castle.

The footballer accepted the honour from Prince William for his services to vulnerable children, following his campaign for free school meals to children during lockdown and holiday periods.

The awards ceremony took place at Windsor Castle yesterday (9 November) and Marcus Rashford took his mum, Melanie Rashford, as his guest.

Marcus has often spoken about how his own childhood background inspired him to campaign against child poverty. He has frequently praised his mum Melanie, who raised him and his four siblings as a single parent, and chose to bring her to the important ceremony.

“I’ve been trying to spread positive messages to young kids, and me receiving this today is another message for them,” Marcus said of his MBE.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is also the President of the Football Association (FA), shared a photograph of Marcus receiving his award on social media, as did the Queen through the official Royal Family Account.

Alongside the photo, a caption read, “Today footballer Marcus Rashford collected an MBE for services to vulnerable children. Rashford famously fundraised and campaigned for the provision of free school meals in England during holidays and lockdowns, driven by his own childhood experiences.”

Actress Dame Sheila Hancock was also honoured during the ceremony, receiving a Damehood for her services to drama and charity. In addition, Welsh rugby player Alun Wyn Jones was awarded an OBE for his services to sport.
