Another season, another controversy. Marc Jacobs’s SS17 show on the last day of NYFW sparked angry comments after giving white models fake dreadlocks.

In a lengthy Instagram comment, Jacobs called the cultural appropriation tag “nonsense”. Hairstylist Guido Palau also denied the link, telling People that Rasta culture wasn’t an influence: “I don’t really think about that. I take inspiration from every culture. Style comes from clashing things. It’s always been there - if you’re creative, if you make food, music, and fashion, whatever, you’re inspired by everything.”

The people, however, weren’t impressed with a plethora of tweets criticising Jacobs for his lack of black models.

The rainbow dreadlocks were spun and hand-dyed by the mother and daughter behind Etsy store, Dreadlocks by Jena. Merging raver looks with a schoolgirl vibe, the collection also featured Jacobs’s super high signature platform boots.

As usual, the world’s top models walked the show with Kendall Jenner, the Hadid sisters and Adriana Lima being spotted.

Jacobs isn’t the first designer to be called out on his approach to other cultures with big-name brands including Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino also on the naughty list. Let’s hope he’s the last.
