World events have loomed heavy over the AW22 season, with shows taking on a more political slant than usual following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, just as Paris Fashion Week was kicking off.

Understandably, a dark mood continued to hang over Berlin Fashion Week, which took place on March 14-20 and saw numerous designers make statements about the war through their collections. And at Marc Cain's star-studded show, the message was clear: a call for freedom of expression, and above all, peace.

Amid the darkness outside, and further afield, Marc Cain took over the Variete Wintergarten theatre and filled it with an uplifting hue of bright pink – the perfect setting for the presentation of the AW22 collection entitled 'Express Yourself'.

The audience was heaving with German stars including Leonie Hanne, Emilia Schüle and Princess Lilly zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, while Desperate Housewives actor Marcia Cross had flown in specially for the event.

Models stormed the stage and elegantly sashayed through the rows of tables wearing brightly coloured ensembles which were inspired by the Sixties and Nineties. The mini skirts which have dominated the past few seasons were rendered in bold hues and paired with matching blazers, while satin suits, flowing dresses and casual co-ords offered endless options for laid-back chic.

Colour blocking was the biggest trend on show and came in endless standout combinations, from green and lilac to red paired with pink – all worn with confidence and style by a beautifully diverse range of models who ranged in provenance as well as age.

But the most poignant moment came at the close of the show. The lights were briefly turned out and came back on again to show all 47 models standing united on the stage, each displaying open palms with the peace sign painted on them.

'It was extremely touching and quite haunting,' said Marcia Cross. The brand also made a sizeable donation to charities in support of Ukraine in a clear statement against war and violence, and in hope for a more peaceful future.
