The Foreign Office has lifted its blanket travel ban for Tunisia, giving Britons the opportunity to return for the first time in two years. It still advises against travel to the southern half of the country, but the beach resorts of the north, and countless other sights, are now safe to visit.

The Foreign Office warns against travel to the whole of 15 destinations, and parts of a further 40.

Unsurprisingly, all of the places on the former list are in Africa or the Middle East. They include Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Mauritania. Travel to these countries is not impossible - indeed, tour operators such as Intrepid and Hinterland still offer tours to Afghanistan - but insurance will be difficult to come by.
