You want to get away from it all. But how?

One way to maximise the chance you will never see another human on your travels is to be as far away from roads as possible, from the hum and thrum of traffic and people who create it.

In the age of the automobile you might think this near impossible in Great Britain, but thanks to mapping experts Esri UK, we can reveal how to find yourself at least a kilometre from the nearest road - and there are plenty of spots to choose from.

First of all, best head to Scotland. As you can see from the map below, much more of the country is remote from roads compared to England and Wales.

In fact, overall, 27,520 square kilometres of the UK is a kilometre or more from the nearest road (accounting for 11.7 per cent of total land area). Of that, Scotland accounts for 83.5 per cent, with 28.6 per cent of its land more than a kilometre from the nearest classified road, including motorways, A and B roads and all officially named roads. Book a trip to the Highlands or Highlands, as well as the Cairngorms, to escape the traffic.

South of the border it is the north of England and Wales that harbours the most remote countryside, though just 2.5 per cent of the former is a kilometre away from roads, and 5.3 per cent of the latter.

  1. Scotland 28.6 per cent (22,981 square kilometres) at least a kilometre from a road

  2. Wales 5.3 per cent (1,128 square km)

  3. England 2.5 per cent (3,411 square km)

Which county has the most remote places?

It will come as no surprise that zero per cent of Greater London is more than a kilometre from a road, with the entire city at gridlock. Try the North Wessex Downs, the Medway or the Essex coast.

It is the residents of the North East who have the most elbow room, with 11.3 per cent of the region far away from roads, or 987 square kilometres. This is perhaps why Northumberland National Park is a designated Dark Sky Park.

Next is the North West, thanks to the Lake District, with 10 per cent remote from roads, and Yorkshire and Humber, home to the Yorkshire Dales, with 6.3 per cent far away from roads.

Spare a thought for residents of the South East (0.53 per cent), West Midlands (0.16 per cent) and Eastern (0.63 per cent), whose land is choked by roads.

Where are the most remote places to stay?

Earlier this year, Telegraph Travel reporter Annabel Fenwick Elliott was on the hunt for the most remote cottages in Britain, and used as her barometer distance from the train station. See here for 11 of the most remote places to stay in the UK.
