Manchester United proved too good for Istanbul Basaksehir as they cruised to victory in their Champions League meeting at Old Trafford.

United were stunned in Turkey in the reverse fixture but had no such troubles here, and early strikes by Bruno Fernandes took the game away from the visitors.

Marcus Rashford added one from the spot to go in 3-0 at half-time, and although Deniz Turuc fired in a free-kick to pull one back, United scored late through Dan James and clinched three crucial points to move a step closer to the knockout stages.

Here’s how the United players rated:

David de Gea – 6: Not a busy night for the United goalkeeper, whose pick in goal over Dean Henderson showed just how much Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to win this game. Failed to keep out Turuc’s excellent free-kick.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5: Unusually sloppy in a couple of first-half moments, earning a rollicking from his manager, but otherwise a composed display. Seemed to be limping slightly after he was substituted, which could be a concern for Solskjaer going forwards.

Victor Lindelof – 6: Performed solidly in central defence although he had one or two scary moments when Demba Ba broke free in the box.

Harry Maguire – 6: An important first-half block kept United’s clean sheet intact heading into half-time, but was not always totally convincing.

Alex Telles – 6: A quiet game from the left-back who is continuing to find his feet at Old Trafford.

Fred – 7: Another industrious performance in midfield from the Brazilian.

Bruno Fernandes – 9: A stunning strike early in the first half, connecting beautifully with a half-volley, followed by a tap in set United on course for their victory.

Donny van de Beek – 8: An impressive display at both ends of the pitch from the Dutchman, who will have given his manager more food for thought as he tries to break into the Premier League XI.

Anthony Martial – 7: Some incisive dribbling from Martial cut the visitors open at times, even if the forward couldn’t find the clear sight of goal he was looking for.

Edinson Cavani – 6: A relatively quiet game from the Uruguayan striker on his first start for the club as some of his teammates grabbed the headlines, but he will be pleased with more minutes under the belt.

Marcus Rashford – 7: Won a penalty which he calmly converted on another good night for the forward.
