Man arrested for false imprisonment after missing 18-year-old found 'safe and well'

An 18-year-old woman who was reported missing in the early hours of Sunday morning has been found "safe and well". Marnie Clayton, who is from Bracknell in Berkshire, was last seen leaving the Atik nightclub in Windsor at around 2am on 16 January. But, she was later reported missing by her family just before 3am when she failed to return home.

Since then, Thames Valley Police who were leading the search confirmed they had located the missing 18-year-old in Basingstoke on Monday afternoon [17 January]. The force also confirmed that a 21-year-old man from Reading has been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment and making threats to kill.

The unidentified man was taken into police custody where he currently remains and is also being questioned on suspicion of battery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breach of police bail.

Speaking about the case, local policing area commander for Windsor and Maidenhead, Superintendent Michael Greenwood, told the media: "I am delighted to be able to confirm that we have located Marnie safe and well and returned her home to her family, who were naturally extremely concerned for her. This outcome is the result of fantastic work from officers and staff from both Thames Valley Police and our colleagues in Hampshire."

Supt Greenwood added that Thames Valley Police and Hampshire forces had received "hundreds of calls" in relation to the investigation, and thanked "the many thousands of members of the public who shared our appeal to locate her".

"It cannot be underestimated how important the information received was in locating Marnie safe and well," Greenwood added. "I am very proud of all of our officers and staff and colleagues in Hampshire for their work, and also all of the members of our local community who shared appeals and called us with the information which has helped us bring Marnie home."

Elsewhere in the UK, police are still searching for a missing 28-year-old woman who was last seen on New Year's Day. Alathea Byrne, who goes by the name Alice, was last sighted at around 10am on 1 January leaving a flat on Marlborough Street in Edinburgh where she had met with friends. Prior to that, she was last seen by her family at 2am on New Year's Eve, before heading to a beach party in Portobello.

The search for Alice is currently in its third week, and police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward by contacting Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0647 of 2 January.
