Man, 19, arrested for murder after woman, 20, found dead in stream

Police have arrested a teenager on suspicion of murder after a woman’s body was found in a stream in Staffordshire on Thursday.

The 20-year-old woman - named as Keeley Bunker by friends - travelled to Birmingham from her home in Tamworth, Staffordshire, on Wednesday evening to go to a concert but did not return home.

She was last seen at 4am on Thursday in Leyfields, Tamworth.

Ms Bunker’s body was discovered in a stream in Wigginton Park near her home at 9pm by family members who had spent hours searching for her, one family source said.

The force said her body was located on Roman Way.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said they received reports of someone in the water near Edgar Close and sent two ambulances and a paramedic officer to the scene.

The woman was found when they arrived but nothing could be done to save her.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Wigginton Park remains cordoned while investigations continue.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called by Staffordshire Police to reports of a patient in the water near to Edgar Close, Tamworth at 9.10pm last night.

"Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene. On arrival we discovered one patient, a woman.

"Sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead at the scene."

Local resident Alan Marshall told BirminghamLive: “I can’t believe it’s happened right outside our house.

“We have lived here 35 years and nothing like this has ever happened. The first we knew was at 9 last night when we heard a dog bark.

“Since then forensics and the police have been there all night. I’ve three daughters and it really makes you think.

“It’s always been a fairly quiet area, you’d never think it’d happen here.”

A police spokesman said: “We have cordoned off three areas for forensic examination as work continues to understand the circumstances around the woman’s death.

“We would politely request that people refrain from speculating as to the circumstances of the woman’s death as we continue to investigate.

“A Home Office post-mortem will take place in due course.

“A 19-year-old man from Tamworth has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody.

“We have increased the police presence in the area as our investigations continue.”
