Download almost any dating app and you’ll be asked to choose your gender. For some, that’s an easy choice between male and female. For others, it’s difficult to tick either of those boxes.

When it comes to gender, people identify in lots of different ways (you can get clued up on LGBTQ+ terms and their meanings here). But for too long, dating apps have forced users to choose between listing themselves 'she' and 'he' with no other option.

But from this week, dating app OkCupid is out to make sure every dater can truly represent their gender identity by letting users state their own pronouns in their profiles, alongside important information about you.

Collaborating with leading LGBTQ organisation GLAAD, OkCupid now allows users to choose between the pronouns 'He/ Him', 'She/ Her' and 'They/ Them', as well as giving daters an option to enter a different pronoun that better represents them.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan.com/uk, OkCupid’s Chief Marketing Officer Melissa Hobley said, "We think our pronoun feature is a really important step for our LGBTQIA communities, and we’re proud to have been the first to introduce it."

In a longer post, Melissa added, "The most beautiful, meaningful and rewarding connections are formed when people are able to identify and are celebrated as their authentic selves."

OkCupid also covers 13 sexual orientations and 22 gender options, making online dating more inclusive, one match at a time.

We are SO here for this, and also predicting some serious OkCupid activity over the next few days…
