Malaysians hopeful as Anwar Ibrahim appointed PM
STORY: Anwar's supporters gathered outside his house in Kuala Lumpur, praying and hugging one another while some residents expressed hope of the country moving forward with the end of the political deadlock.
Anwar's appointment caps a three-decade-long political journey from a protege of veteran leader Mahathir Mohamad to protest leader, to a prisoner convicted of sodomy, to opposition leader and, finally, prime minister.
However, his rival in Saturday's (November 19) general election, ex-premier Muhyiddin Yassin, called on Anwar to prove he has a majority in parliament after the king's announcement. Muhyiddin said he still believes he has secured a majority for his own coalition.
