Coronavirus: The 17 major developments that happened on Monday

Deaths: A further 11 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England. There were no new deaths of people who tested positive for coronavirus in Wales or Scotland. Read more here.

Policy: Boris Johnson is to make a decision on whether face coverings should be worn in shops in England in the next few days. He was seen wearing one for the first time in a shop over the weekend and said on Monday he thinks it’s “very important” to wear one in shops. Read more here.

Smoking outside pubs might be banned to allow more pavement drinking. A cross-party group of peers are set to table an amendment to emergency legislation aimed at boosting the hospitality industry. Read more here.

Wales: Mark Drakeford, First Minister of Wales, has said face coverings will be mandatory on public transport from 27 July. He said they must be three layer, and it includes taxis. Read more here.

Scotland: It’s now mandatory to wear a face covering in an indoor shopping centre in Scotland as they reopen today. Hospitals are reopening for non-COVID patients too. Read more here.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said there were no new deaths in the last five days, but there has been a spike in cases, some linked to a care home. Many of them were asymptomatic. Read more here.

England: Three places, Braintree, Peterborough and Blackburn, have recorded a rise in week on week rates of coronavirus cases. The rate has fallen slightly in Leicester, where there is a local lockdown. Read more here.

Leicester lockdown: The Mayor of Leicester said the city’s lockdown is no longer justified because data shows the outbreak in Leicester is actually confined to a relatively small area. Sir Peter Soulsby said that he has only just been provided with accurate local data for the Leicester outbreak and if they had have known earlier it would have prevented the Leicester lockdown. Local lockdowns: More than 100 outbreaks of COVID-19 are being tackled across the UK each week, the health secretary has revealed. Matt Hancock said “targeted action” was being taken to halt the spread of coronavirus in such cases. Read more here.

Social distancing: A pub in Cornwall has installed an electric fence along the bar to ensure its customers adhere to social distancing. A picture taken inside the Star Inn and posted on social media on Sunday showed two strands of wire running across the front of the bar. An accompanying sign reads: “Warning. Electric fence”.

Science: Long term effects of coronavirus on people, even those who suffered mild symptoms, could be worse than first thought, according to researchers and doctors in northern Italy. Psychosis, insomnia, kidney disease, spinal infections, strokes, chronic tiredness and mobility issues are being identified in former coronavirus patients in Lombardy, the region worst hit during the country’s outbreak. There’s a huge disparity in coronavirus mortality rates in English hospital, data has shown. The Guardian said one hospital trust in south-west England had a death rate from the disease of 80% while in one London trust it was just 12.5%. Read more here.

There has been a record number of daily new coronavirus cases globally for the second time in three days, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. A total of 230,370 new COVID-19 cases were recorded worldwide on Sunday, along with 5,285 deaths. Read more here.

A 30-year-old who claimed coronavirus was a hoax has died after attending a party in Texas. “Just before the patient died, they looked at their nurse and said ‘I think I made a mistake, I thought this was a hoax, but it’s not,’” said Dr Jane Appleby, the chief medical officer at Methodist hospital in San Antonio. Hong Kong will tighten social distancing measures again from Wednesday amid growing concerns of a devastating third wave of coronavirus infections, after 52 new cases were reported. Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s leader, announced the new measures on Monday after weeks without any cases of local transmission of the virus. Read more here.

Positive news

New York City has recorded no new coronavirus deaths in 24 hours for the first time since March, preliminary data shows. New York City council member Mark Levine wrote on Twitter: “Thank you to the healthcare workers, essential workers and everyone who made this possible.” Read more here.
